The 2022 F1 Drivers’ World Championship ended in an unexpected manner, with Max Verstappen securing the title in Japan after full points were awarded for the shortened race, contrary to what almost everyone had expected. While many celebrated Verstappen’s historic championship win, there have been criticisms from some quarters, including Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.
Horner, while speaking to the media in Japan, made his statement and explained why he thought it was a mistake to award full points for the race. “I think it’s a mistake,” he said, adding, “I think it’s a mistake [a race resumed after a red flag] wasn’t included [in the regulations] after the issues in Spa last year.” He suggested that the regulations haven’t been properly modified to address such situations, leading to confusion and surprises in Japan.
“The regulations obviously haven’t been mopped up because we were under the strong impression that only 75 percent points would be scored,” Horner said. He then revealed how Max’s championship win took everyone in the team by surprise. “We felt we were going to be one point short. But in the end, Checo’s move on Charles nailed Max the championship,” he said. “So you could see his surprise, the team’s surprise. But what a wonderful surprise.”
While the decision to award full points was technically correct under the current regulations, there have been suggestions that the regulations will be updated to avoid a repeat. Horner responded to this by saying, “I’m certain it will be.” The FIA is expected to review the regulations and make necessary modifications to avoid a similar scenario in the future
