In the world of Formula One, Max Verstappen is a name that needs no introduction. The Dutch driver, currently holding the title of defending world champion, has had his fair share of ups and downs on the circuit. While many see him as a reserved and closed off person, it’s no secret that to be a championship contender, you have to be ruthless. However, in an interview with the Daily Mail, Max spoke about a relationship that is quite the opposite of ruthless.
When asked who his best friend on the grid was, Max didn’t hesitate to answer.
“I get on really well with Lando because he is just himself and normal. He is my best friend on the grid.”
The Lando he refers to is none other than McLaren driver Lando Norris. Max and Lando go way back to their go-karting days. While they never raced against each other, Max recalls being able to see Lando’s talent from years ago.
“He loves what he is doing. I could see clearly from years ago in go-karting that he was very quick – though we never raced against each other.”
“Good performances were not just one-offs or hit and miss; he was always up at the front.”
It’s evident that Max holds Lando in high regard, not just as a friend, but as a fellow driver.
“He is very committed, very passionate about the sport and very intelligent,” Max added.
“He is someone you can have a good laugh with, but also talk about serious things with. He is a good guy.”
Max also acknowledged Lando’s growth over the years, both as a driver and as a person.
“Lando can be a little shy but he is a super nice guy and you can see, from year one to now, how he has grown as a person,” he said.
“That helps his performance because he has more confidence in himself.”
It seems that Max and Lando have a strong friendship that extends beyond their time on the track. While it may come as a surprise to some, it’s a testament to the fact that even in the competitive world of Formula One, there is room for friendship and camaraderie.
