Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has issued a stern warning against “defamatory statements” made about his team over allegations of budget cap breaches. This comes after Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff made comments regarding the issue, suggesting that Red Bull had exceeded their budget last year.
Horner hit back at Wolff’s statements, stating that they were “absolutely unacceptable.” He also pointed out that Red Bull Racing had to make more redundancies than Mercedes during the pandemic, emphasizing the impact the situation has had on his team.
The allegations that Red Bull exceeded their budget cap last year have created a lot of controversy in the sport. However, Horner stated that the FIA has not yet completed its investigation into the matter, and therefore, he asked for a follow-up of the process.
In response to the accusations, Horner warned that the team would take legal action against those who made “defamatory statements” unless they were retracted. He emphasized that such statements were unacceptable, and the team would consider all options available to them.
“These are defamatory statements and absolutely unacceptable,” Horner said. “The FIA has stated that they have not completed their process, so unless there is a clear withdrawal of those statements, we will be taking it extremely seriously.”
The allegations that Red Bull exceeded their budget cap last year have cast a shadow over the team’s success in the 2021 season. However, Horner has strongly denied any wrongdoing and has called for proof before accusations are made.
“These statements are totally defamatory to the team, to the brands, and to Formula 1,” Horner added. “We will look at all the options available to us because it is absolutely unacceptable to be making the comments that were made.”
